Pantones vs CMYK?
Coated stock has a surface (think of varnish on wood) added to it at the paper mill. This coating allows ink to sit up on top of the surface of the paper without seeping into the paper fibers. Halftone dots and type are therefore very crisp and controllable during the printing process. The coating usually comes in a Dull/Silk finish or a Gloss finish, here is our selection below. The Pantone Library generally assumes coated stocks are being used for most colors this is where the C in the Pantone name comes in. Older traditional ink and plate based offset presses needed this coating for the ink to sit a top, Pantone (the company) actually has a less commonly used Pantone color library for Uncoated Papers when using Offset Press, companies like banks used to actually have two brand colors ones for Ink on Coated Paper and another color for Ink on Uncoated Papers. More modern digital presses like our machines can actually achieve a lot of Coated Pantone’s and colors on Uncoated Papers.

Frequently Asked Paper Questions
What is GSM?
GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. Meaning that if you were to put the paper type in 1 meter square how much would that paper weight in grams. So, put simply the higher the number the thicker the paper.
For example the standard paper in your office is likely around 80 GSM, paper you would see in a nice magazine or Booklet would range from 100GSM to 150 GSM.
